Affordability & Taxes

Now more than ever we need to make sure Coloradans have the financial resources to put food on the table, gas in their cars, and to keep a roof over their heads.

Today, 1 in 3 Colorado families spend more than 30% of their income on housing. That is hefty burden for our hard-working middle-class families. We must work quickly to get dollars into the pockets of the people to help address the problem. To do that we will need to repeal much of the legislation that has taken money out of their pockets and has increased the cost of housing. We also need to make sure that any new legislation is fiscally responsible and does not waste your tax dollars.

Speaking of tax dollars, I am a HUGE supporter of the Tax Payer's Bill of Rights (TABOR). Many Colorado families have already seen $1500 of their hard-earned dollars returned in the form of a TABOR refund. This is a direct result of the hard work of so many legislators fighting on behalf of tax payers. This money did not come from a
stimulus package supported by the Governor or Legislature….this came from TABOR!
The very same TABOR the current administration and many in the legislature have tried
to repeal or at least diminish.

Unfortunately, it seems as though our government is tinkering with TABOR. Our State Constitution is clear: That government must have voter consent prior to raising their taxes. This is the agreement between the people of Colorado and their government, and this agreement must be respected and protected. While our constitution protects us from taxation without representation, it does allows “fees” to be collected without the consent of the people.

What were once referred to as “taxes” are now being called “fees”, and these “fees” are everywhere.  There are now “fees” on your Amazon deliveries, on your Uber rides, and your Doordash and GrubHub deliveries. There was also an increase to the gas “tax” this year, but it was specifically called a “fee” to get around voters’ consent. I will always vote to uphold TABOR and to close any loopholes that currently exist.
